When you move matters almost as much as how you move. The moving industry has dramatic seasonal price swings, and choosing the right month can save you 30–50% on your total moving cost.

The Moving Season Calendar

Peak Season: June – August

Cost: Highest (100% of base rate)

This is when 60% of all moves happen. Families move during summer break, college students relocate, and the weather is favorable in most of the country. Expect:

  • Prices 20–40% higher than off-season
  • Limited carrier availability (book 6–8 weeks ahead)
  • Longer transit times due to high volume
  • Less flexibility on dates

Shoulder Season: April – May, September – October

Cost: Moderate (80–90% of peak rate)

The sweet spot for many movers. Weather is still good, prices are more reasonable, and carriers have better availability. September and October are particularly good — kids are back in school, demand drops, and carriers are eager to fill trucks.

Off-Season: November – March

Cost: Lowest (60–75% of peak rate)

If you have flexibility, this is when you'll find the best deals. Carriers offer discounts to keep trucks moving. However, consider:

  • Winter weather can cause delays (especially in northern states)
  • Holiday periods (Thanksgiving, Christmas) have limited availability
  • January and February are the absolute cheapest months

Month-by-Month Breakdown

January: Cheapest month. Carriers offer deep discounts. Cold weather risk in northern routes.

February: Second cheapest. Short month means fewer moving days available. Valentine's Day weekend is surprisingly popular.

March: Prices start climbing. Spring break moves begin. Still 15–20% cheaper than summer.

April: Moderate pricing. Great weather in most regions. Book 4–5 weeks ahead.

May: Memorial Day weekend is expensive. Mid-month is still reasonable. Last chance for moderate pricing before summer.

June: Peak season begins. Prices jump 20–30%. Book 6+ weeks ahead.

July: Most expensive month. Highest demand, longest wait times. Book 8+ weeks ahead.

August: Still peak but slightly less than July. Back-to-school moves create a late-month rush.

September: Prices drop significantly after Labor Day. Excellent availability. One of the best months to move.

October: Great pricing, great weather, great availability. Highly recommended.

November: Cheap but complicated. Thanksgiving week is nearly impossible to book. First two weeks are excellent value.

December: Very cheap but holiday logistics are challenging. First two weeks work well. Avoid the week of Christmas.

Day of the Week Matters Too

Cheapest: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday

Most Expensive: Friday, Saturday, Sunday

Avoid: First and last days of the month (lease turnover creates surge demand)

The Best Strategy

If you have flexibility, target mid-September through mid-October or mid-January through February. Move mid-week, mid-month. You could save $1,500–$3,000 compared to a July Saturday move.
